Requirements to Register a .us Domain

Requirements to Register a .us Domain

The registration of .US domains is available on our platform for users who need them; however, the process has certain restrictions in place to protect the integrity and security of the United States. These restrictions ensure that .US domains are used by entities that have a legitimate connection to the country, whether through citizenship, residency, or commercial operations within U.S. territory.

Applicants interested in registering a .US TLD domain must meet at least one of three eligibility categories and certify that they have a "genuine presence in the United States".

Below are the categories and requirements you must meet before starting the process:

1. Eligibility categories

By accepting the registration policies, applicants confirm that they meet at least one of the following categories:

Category 1 — Natural person

  • Be a natural citizen of the United States, a permanent resident of the United States of America or any of its possessions or territories, or whose primary place of domicile is in the United States of America or any of its possessions.

Category 2 — Entity or organization incorporated in the U.S.

  • Be an entity or organization incorporated within one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or any of the possessions or territories of the United States, or otherwise organized under the laws of a U.S. state (including federal, state, or local governments, political subdivisions, and unincorporated organizations based in the United States).

Category 3 — Genuine presence in the U.S.

  • Be an entity or organization that has a genuine presence in the United States of America or any of its possessions or territories.

2. Conditions for foreign entities

If the applicant is a foreign entity, they must declare their country of citizenship and meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • Regularly sell goods in the United States.

  • Regularly provide services in the United States.

  • Regularly engage in commercial activities or other relationships (commercial or non-commercial, including nonprofit) in the United States.

  • Maintain an office or other property within the United States.

3. Periodic validations

All active .US domains undergo weekly, random, and automatic validations to ensure that domain owners still meet the requirements. A small number of domains are selected and a confirmation email is sent. Each registrant has 30 days to respond. If there is no response, a second contact attempt will be made. If there is no response to the second contact, the domain will be deleted without a refund.
