What Are Inodes and Why Do They Matter in Your Hosting?

An inode is an identifier for each file or folder in your hosting account. It doesn't matter if the file is large or small: every file, image, email, or folder counts as an inode.

If you reach the inode limit of your plan, you won't be able to upload more files or create new folders until you free up space.

How many inodes does each plan have?

You can check your account's inode usage by logging into cPanel and looking for the file usage section in the right column.

What causes high inode usage?

Some actions or applications can consume many inodes quickly:

  • WordPress and Moodle: Each plugin, image, update, or course in Moodle can generate thousands of small files.
  • Emails: Each email stored in your mailbox is an inode.
  • Cache and temporary files: Some plugins and dynamic sites generate files that accumulate over time.
  • Backups on the server: If you use your hosting to store backups, you can reach the inode limit quickly.

How to free up inodes?

If you're close to the limit, here are some simple ways to free up inodes:

  1. Delete unnecessary files: Review and remove files you no longer use.
  2. Clean up your email: Delete old emails or empty the trash.
  3. Clear the cache of WordPress, Moodle, or any application you use: Use plugins or tools to remove temporary files.
  4. Remove unused plugins and themes: If you have themes or plugins in WordPress that you don't use, uninstall them.
  5. Avoid storing backups on your hosting: Download them to your computer instead.

What happens if I reach the limit?

If you reach the maximum number of inodes, you won't be able to create new files or folders. You have 7 days to reduce your usage before your account is fully restricted.
