Registering a domain with the .edu.mx extension requires meeting certain guidelines established by Registry .MX. This type of domain is reserved exclusively for educational and research institutions accredited by the Mexican Government, so official documentation supporting the request must be submitted.
Unlike other domains, the registration and renewal of an .edu.mx domain is completely free and is automatically renewed every year.
Below are the requirements you must gather before starting the process:
The .edu.mx domain is reserved for:
Educational institutions registered with the SEP (Ministry of Education) or affiliated with a University recognized by the Mexican Government.
Job training or technical education schools accredited by a competent Mexican Government office.
Preschool education institutions registered with the SEP or affiliated with a recognized University.
Research institutions registered with CONACYT.
Educational institutions affiliated with the Ministry of Education only need to provide their Work Center Code (Clave de Centro de Trabajo - CCT), which certifies the institution's eligibility.
If you don't have a CCT, eligibility can be proven with any of the following documents:
Registration with the SEP.
Affiliation document from a University with official recognition.
Registration as a Job Training or Technical Education School.
Registration with CONACYT as a research institution.
Copy of the official gazette proving the institution's creation (for Universities).
The person submitting the request must provide a digitized copy of a valid government-issued ID with signature. Accepted IDs include:
INE (Mexican voter ID).
Mexican passport.
The process must be carried out by the legal representative, director of the work center, or any applicant who can demonstrate their relationship with the educational institution.
The requested domain name must be directly related to the official name granted by the SEP or the corresponding authority. For example, if the official name is "Escuela Primaria Emiliano Zapata," the domain could be: primariaemilianozapata.edu.mx
The name may be rejected if it contains generic terms, unrecognized abbreviations, or creates ambiguity.
Once all requirements have been submitted and the electronic application has been signed, Registry .MX validates and activates or rejects the request within 1 business day.
Register the educational institution's name exactly as it appears on the CCT or official documentation as the "Registrant Contact," avoiding the use of individual names.
Double-check the spelling and consistency of the requested domain.
Avoid including unnecessary hyphens or special characters.
Make sure all contact email addresses are active and up to date.
When signing the electronic application, ensure the digital signature matches your official ID; it is recommended to sign from a mobile device.
